Immediate Life Support (ILS) Training & Medical Emergencies for Dental Teams

Our Immediate Life Support (ILS) Course is specifically designed for dental professionals involved in sedation or managing patients with complex medical needs.

This comprehensive training equips you with advanced lifesaving skills beyond Basic Life Support, meeting the highest standards set by the Resuscitation Council UK, GDC, and CQC.

Course Duration: 6 Hours (Full Day) (Annual Refresher)

Who Should Attend?

Recommended annually for all clinical staff as per Resuscitation Council UK and GDC guidelines.

- Dentists providing conscious sedation (IV, oral, inhalation)
- Sedation-trained dental nurses and therapists
- Dental team members responsible for managing deteriorating patients
- Any clinician requiring advanced emergency life support skills

Course Content:

This practical course builds on Basic Life Support (Adult & Paediatric) to also include:

Recognition of the deteriorating patient
— early warning signs and assessment
Advanced airway management — bag-valve-mask ventilation, airway adjuncts
Cardiac rhythm recognition and management of arrhythmias
Safe and effective use of emergency drugs
Team-based emergency response and communication
Case study/scenario-based training
covering real-life dental sedation emergencies

Managing Common Medical Emergencies in Dentistry

- Anaphylaxis & adrenaline auto-injector use
- Asthma attacks
- Hypoglycaemia
- Epileptic seizures
- Syncope (fainting)
- Cardiac arrest
- Angina & myocardial infarction
- Stroke & FAST assessment

Emergency Preparedness for Dental Settings

- Roles & responsibilities of team members
- Calling for help (999 vs emergency transfer)
- Emergency equipment familiarisation

Assessment & Certification:

Continuous practical assessment
by the instructor
On successful completion, participants will receive:

- Immediate Life Support & Medical Emergencies in the Dental Setting Certificate
(Valid for 1 year, meeting professional CPD requirements)

Note: We have condensed our Immediate Life Support and Medical Emergencies training to be suitable for experienced healthcare professionals’ CPD, and those that surround them. You will receive a CPD-certified certificate on completion, however if you require an accredited certificate - courses will be slightly longer than one day to meet the awarding bodies qualification requirements. Please contact our team to discuss if you require specifically accredited certificates.
